Stronghold Crusader Definitive Edition review

Now, after a year of waiting and a slew of new releases, none of which quite lived up to the original, Firefly Studios is back with a bang: the definitive remastered Stronghold Crusader: Definitive Edition. The news has sent shivers down the spines of millions of longtime fans, but it also raises an important question: is this grand return just a ploy to cash in on our nostalgia, or can it really breathe new life into the classic game while staying true to its roots and having something new for today’s gamers? In this comprehensive review, we’ll take a look at this new castle brick by brick and see if the old king still has his crown on his head.

Official Stronghold Crusader: Definitive Edition Trailer
A 2002 castle dressed up in 2025; what is this new version all about?

First of all, let’s start with the official information. Stronghold Crusader: Definitive Edition was developed and published by the original and proper developer, Firefly Studios. The game was released on July 15, 2025 (i.e. 24 Tihr 1404) for PC and Steam.
But what exactly is this version? Many think that it is a complete remake, but it is not. Definitive Edition is considered an Expanded Remaster. What does this mean? That means that the core gameplay, game engine, and that classic feel have remained completely intact, but a lot of new content and graphical and technical improvements have been added to make it much richer. According to many critics, this version is something between a simple remaster and a full remake, and this was exactly what many fans wanted.

To better understand this version, we need to see what Firefly’s strategy is. The game is actually a sequel to the success of Stronghold: Definitive Edition (a remake of the first version of the game), which came out in 2023 and was also received by Kelly. It shows that Firefly has a clear direction: to preserve that nostalgic magic and classic gameplay that fans love, while at the same time modernizing the technical parts and adding new content so that the game does not become repetitive.
There is a logical reason for this. Firefly Studio is a small and independent team. Creating a complete remake from scratch with a new graphics engine is both expensive, time-consuming and risky. In return, this expanded reconstruction method allows them to produce a very valuable product with a smaller budget and show their loyal fans that they respect their roots and memories.
Of course, this strategy is like a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it makes long-time fans feel that their beloved game has not been tampered with and has the same old feel. It feels like a love letter to us longtime fans. But hey, that means some of the game’s old problems, like the slightly dumb AI and especially the pathfinding, have remained pretty much the same. It’s a compromise between preserving nostalgia and modernizing it completely; a decision that makes Crusader: DE the best version for longtime fans, but might be a bit annoying for brand new gamers who are used to today’s standards.
What’s new in Stronghold Crusader: Definitive Edition: New armies and lords!
Now, let’s get to the exciting part! Perhaps the coolest part of this new version is the whole lot of new content that’s been added to the game. Firefly hasn’t just tweaked the graphics, they’ve beefed up the game in every way. One of the biggest changes to the game is the addition of 8 brand new troops. These troops, all of which can be built from a new building called the Bedouin Camp, act as a third faction alongside the Crusader (European) and Arab forces, adding a lot of strategic variety to the game. Inspired by the Bedouin tribes of Arabia, these troops each have a cool ability that can change the entire equation of war.
In addition to the new troops, four new AI Lords (two Christian and two Muslim) have been added to the game, bringing the total number of Lords from 16 to 20. This is great news for fans of the Skirmish mode, which is the beating heart of the game.

More importantly, these Lords are not just a new look with new dialogue; each has their own castles, strategies, armies, and behaviors. For example, one of the new lords, The Sentinel, is known for building strong defensive fortresses and using crossbowmen a lot. These new lords greatly increase the variety and replayability of the game, forcing you to choose a different strategy for fighting each one.
The single-player content has also been expanded considerably:
Two new historical campaigns: Two completely new storylines, The Barons’ Crusade and The Seventh Crusade, have been added to the game, each with five story missions and telling new historical adventures.
Four new Skirmish paths, called Sands of Time: This section includes 32 new challenging missions, located in four separate paths. These stages are designed to challenge the skills of professional gamers in very difficult and breathtaking scenarios. Some of these stages are so difficult that they will even tire even veterans of the game.
A new Co-op mode: For the first time in the history of the series, a 10-stage campaign has been designed specifically for two-player co-op play. This is one of the most exciting new sections, which we will talk more about later.

Crusader Gameplay Review: A Double-Edged Sword Between Nostalgia and Innovation!
The core of Crusader gameplay has always been a mix of deep economic management and strategic warfare. In the Definitive Edition, this core has been preserved, but efforts have been made to improve it. The good news for long-time fans is that the core construction and economic mechanics have remained completely intact. You still have to carefully manage production chains: from building a lumberjack’s hut and mining stone and iron, to a wheat and apple farm, a mill, a bakery, a gunsmith, and so on. Managing the satisfaction of your people with food, taxes, religion, and entertainment is still the backbone of your empire. This is the same deep and addictive gameplay that we all remember and love.

While the foundation of the battles remains the same, the addition of 8 new forces has brought about a fundamental change in combat strategies. It’s a cautious but clever attempt by the developers to shake up the classic balance of the game.
In the original version, online gameplay and high-level battles were heavily dominated by specific strategies like the Horse Archer Rush. The Arab mercenary forces, especially the Arab Archer and the Arab Swordsman, were so strong and readily available that you often didn’t need to build a European army from the barracks, which had a lot of trouble producing weapons. This made many battles look similar and predictable. The addition of 8 new Bedouin forces isn’t just for variety; it’s a direct attempt by Firefly to break this old “meta” and create more strategic depth. These new forces are designed to be more balanced, with each having its own strengths and weaknesses. For example, the heavy camel rider, which is a powerful unit, can’t shoot while moving, or the destroyer, with its big shield, is slow and expensive. This new design encourages players to use a clever mix of Crusader, Arab, and Bedouin forces rather than relying on a single strategy. This change could make the game feel fresh and exciting for long-time players, but it also carries a risk; tinkering with a formula that has worked for 20 years could upset some die-hard fans.
Artificial Intelligence: Smarter or still the same old same old?
Here we come to the game’s biggest weakness, which unfortunately has been inherited from the original. The enemy AI, and especially the pathfinding of your own troops, still has serious problems. Your soldiers sometimes get confused, don’t take the shortest path, attack irrelevant walls instead of attacking the enemy lord, and generally look a bit dull.
This problem is the heavy price of keeping the game’s engine and core code intact in order to maintain that nostalgic feel. A full remake could have fixed this problem, but as we said, Firefly has chosen a different path. While the new AI lords may have interesting overall strategies and different castles, the basic AI for them and their soldiers is still outdated. In long games, their attacks become repetitive and predictable, and after a big attack, they are usually slow to rebuild their armies.

What about multiplayer and co-op?

Multiplayer has always been one of the most popular parts of Crusader, and it has undergone a major change in the Definitive Edition. The biggest improvement to multiplayer is its full integration with Steam’s infrastructure. You no longer need to install third-party software like GameSpy or GameRanger. Now you can easily invite your friends, create a lobby, and jump into battle with a few clicks. This is a great development that makes online gaming infinitely easier and more accessible.

Despite this great development, there is a fundamental technical problem at the heart of the multiplayer section that has created a huge paradox. The game does not support dedicated servers and works entirely on a peer-to-peer (P2P) connection.

What does this mean? In real-time strategy games, where every millisecond counts and commands must be executed quickly, the P2P structure is very vulnerable. If one player (the host) has a weak or unstable internet connection, the other players will also experience lag, delays in executing commands, and even game disconnections (desync). This problem was also present in Stronghold: Definitive Edition and unfortunately it has been repeated here.

This is where the paradox comes in: the developers clearly want to strengthen the multiplayer by adding a co-op mode, larger maps, and support for up to 8 players. But choosing a P2P infrastructure could potentially discourage this same component with an unreliable and lag-filled online experience. This is the biggest risk in the multiplayer section.
With all this said, the addition of co-op is one of the most exciting and best new features in the game. This mode has a challenging path with 10 missions designed specifically for two-player cooperation. You can play these stages with a friend or with an AI companion.
The potential of this mode is incredible. Imagine defending a common castle with your buddy, or launching a coordinated attack on an enemy castle; one of you cripples the enemy economy with cavalry, and the other with a catapult knocks down walls. This mode can create some really cool and funny moments and completely change the gaming experience.

What changes have been made to the graphics, sound, and technical aspects of Stronghold Crusader Definitive Edition?

Firefly has left no stone unturned in the technical department to deliver a truly definitive version. These improvements aren’t just a new paint job, but a deep and meticulous remastering. All of the game’s art, animations, and textures have been remade from scratch by the same artists who made it to the original. The result is a much cleaner, clearer, and more vivid look with more detail. The animations of the workers walking, the swordsmen fighting, and even that heat wave in the desert have all been recreated with stunning quality. Most importantly, this graphical remaster is completely faithful to the original’s art style and isometrics; so the game feels both familiar and new at the same time.

The game’s audio has also been completely remastered. The game’s legendary soundtrack has been fully remastered by the series’ original composer, Robert L. Euvino, and is now in the game at a much higher quality. It’s a real pleasure to hear those familiar melodies again in this quality.
In addition, many of the original voice actors have returned to re-record classic dialogues and provide new dialogues for the new lords and troops. This is a very smart and cool move by Firefly that shows how important it is for them to preserve the authenticity and atmosphere of the game. Of course, for us Iranians, that memorable Persian dubbing is no longer available at the moment, and we will have to wait until a team can spend the money and time to Persianize this game and relive our memories.
In addition to graphical and audio improvements, several new features have been added to make the game more comfortable (Quality of Life):
A Larger Maps: One of the biggest requests from fans, namely support for larger maps for more epic battles and building huge castles, has finally been fulfilled.

  • Steam Workshop Support: The game fully supports Steam Workshop. This means that players can easily download and play thousands of maps, siege scenarios, campaigns, and game modes that others have built. This feature alone can ensure the game’s longevity for years to come.
  • Improved UI and Camera Rotation: The game’s UI has been modernized and more readable. The ability to rotate the camera and see through buildings has also been added to the game, which is a crucial improvement for better castle management and battles.
Is Stronghold Crusader: Definitive Edition worth playing?
After reviewing everything, it’s time to answer the main question. Did Stronghold Crusader: Definitive Edition live up to its promises? Let’s take a look at the strengths and weaknesses:
  • Strengths: A ton of incredible new content (8 troops, 4 lords, over 40 new stages), amazing technical, graphic and audio improvements that are faithful to the original game, the return of the original voice actors and composer that brings back a sense of nostalgia, the addition of a Co-op mode that has a lot of potential, and full Steam Workshop support that extends the game’s lifespan.
  • Weaknesses: Inheriting the main gameplay problems of the old version, especially the weak AI and the wrong troop pathing that can be frustrating at critical moments. Also, the use of a P2P structure for the multiplayer section that can make for an unstable and laggy online experience.
    Who is this game for?
  • For long-time fans: This is an absolute must-buy. The Definitive Edition is a love letter to you that brings back all your good memories in much better quality and with much more content. Everything you loved about Crusader is here, bigger and better. This is without a doubt the best way to experience the Crusades in today’s world.
  • For new players: This is a great opportunity to experience one of the best and most influential strategy games ever. The tutorial is thorough and will get you started. But be prepared to deal with some old mechanics, especially the not-so-smart AI. If you can get past these old things, there’s a world of endless fun waiting for you.
Firefly has shown that they have long-term plans for the game. They’ve released an official roadmap for post-launch content, which includes the addition of a new economic campaign and a new AI lord in the fall, with more content coming in the winter. It shows the studio’s commitment to the game and its fans, and we can’t help but think that this fortress won’t be abandoned anytime soon.
Stronghold Crusader: Definitive Edition is a triumphant and proud return. Firefly has cleverly struck a delicate balance between preserving nostalgia and adding innovation. It may not be a perfectly built castle, and there are still cracks in its walls, but it stands taller, stronger, and its banners more glorious than ever. It’s time to don your armor, sharpen your sword, and return to the scorching deserts once more. The caravans await, and the people need a true lord.
